Welcome to Wieg's World

Hello and welcome to my website. I assume you're here because you're a discerning, intelligent and thoughtful reader -- or maybe you're just lost on the web. Either way, feel free to take a look around. Cheers.

About Me

I'm Steve Wiegand, a veteran (that means "old") journalist and history writer. I was born in Hawaii, grew up in San Diego and currently live in the Sonoran Desert near Phoenix. Must've taken a wrong turn someplace.

I graduated from Santa Clara University with a B.A. in American Studies and from San Jose State University with a M.S. in Mass Communications. Thus educated, I was still able to find work. Over a 35-year career at the San Diego Evening Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle and Sacramento Bee as a reporter and columnist, I covered everything from mass murders and wild fires to the World Series and tattoo conventions. But most of my career was wasted covering local, state and national politics.

I've written or co-written 10 books on subjects from the Wild West to big-league baseball. That includes three of the famous (or infamous, depending on your perspective) For Dummies series, on U.S. History, the Great Depression and the American Revolution.

In my spare time I like to snorkel in far-off seas, hunt for aces at the poker table and noodle around on the harmonica, although usually not simultaneously.  I also seem to spend a great deal of time thinking about working on something. But to paraphrase Mark Twain, I lie down and the feeling almost always goes away.
